Boscaljon Reaches 1,000 Kills as Guins Fall in Season Opener

College Park, Md. -- Youngstown State senior Ruth Boscaljon became the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills as the Penguins fell to Villanova in four sets in the season opener for both schools.

The Penguins took the first set 25-18, but the Wildcats rebounded to win the next three 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20. YSU will play two more matches at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Invitational on Saturday against Maryland at 1 p.m. and Stony Brook at 5 p.m.

Boscaljon and Allison Heinz finished with eight kills apiece, and Laurie Shives had a team-high 11 digs. Heinz added four blocks, and her .471 attack percentage was YSU's best.

Morgan Petkovich led three Wildcats with double-digits in kills with 18. Kim Maroon had 22 digs.

The Penguins trailed only three times in the first set, but they scored four straight points to turn its final deficit into a 16-13 lead. Heinz's solo block gave the Penguins a 20-14 lead, and YSU held once Villanova got within three.

Villanova seized control of the second set when a 7-1 run turned a 10-10 tie into a 17-11 edge. The Wildcats then scored the first four points of the third set and led by 11 twice.

Youngstown State battled in the fourth set, scoring six straight points to get within 10-9 on a Heinz kill. Villanova went up 16-11, and YSU got no closer than 19-16. Boscaljon's milestone kill made the score 22-17.

Freshman Brittany Holland started in her first career match and made nine digs. Sophomore Brittany Grove made her first career start and had four kills.
