Boscaljon Gets Double-Digit Kills Again as Guins Fall in Three

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Ruth Boscaljon reached double figures in kills for the third straight match, but the Penguins were swept by Valparaiso, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 on Friday at the Beeghly Center.

Boscaljon had 11 kills and hit .296, and Kaitlin O'Hara added six kills for the Penguins (2-8, 0-2 Horizon League).

Amy Groesbeck had a match-high 19 kills, 11 of which came in the first set, to lead Valparaiso (6-4, 1-0 Horizon). Tara Diebler added 11 kills, and Taylor Root had a match-high 17 digs.

Youngstown State scored the first three points of the first set and led by four three different times before Diebler's kill put the Crusaders on top 9-8. YSU scored the next five points to take a 13-9 lead, but Valpo kept chipping away and reclaimed the lead at 18-17. A block by YSU's Dani Soubliere and Allison Heinz tied the score at 20-20, but Valpo scored five of the final six points, three of which came on kills by Groesbeck, to win 25-21.

Valparaiso led the entire second set, and, after going up 15-10, didn't lead by less than four until 23-19.

YSU led 4-3 in the third set, but Valpo answered with an 8-2 run to go up 11-6. The Crusaders pulled ahead by as many as eight before YSU scored three straight points behind kills by O'Hara, Haley Kapferer and Boscaljon, to pull within 20-15. Coming out of a timeout, Valpo scored five straight points to win the set 25-15.

The Penguins finished with seven aces, three of which came by Brittany Holland, and Valpo had six serving errors.

YSU will play two matches at the Pitt Blue and Gold Tournament on Sunday. The Penguins play UMES at 10 a.m. and Pittsburgh at 5 p.m.
