Thirteen Blocks Lead Penguins to Three-Set Sweep at Milwaukee
Milwaukee -- The Youngstown State volleyball team outhit Milwaukee .237 to .053 and rode 13 blocks to a three-set win over the defending Horizon League champions 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 on Friday evening at the Klotsche Center.
Ruth Boscaljon had 10 kills, and Kaitlin O'Hara added nine kills and a career-high seven blocks. Milwaukee was forced into 27 hitting errors, had five serving errors and five more receiving errors.
Kaitlin
O'Hara finished with nine kills and a career-high seven blocks as Milwaukee's
streak of 37 straight Horizon League home wins ended."I thought we served very aggressively, and that allowed us to have some control at the net," YSU head coach Joe Bonner said. "Our middles were very solid blocking, and our back row did well digging and passing."
The Penguins defeated Milwaukee for the first time since 1993. The Panthers had won 37 consecutive Horizon League matches at home.
YSU has won three straight Horizon League matches, adding to wins over Loyola and UIC last weekend at home.
The Penguins went on runs late in all three sets. After the score was tied at 13-13 in the opening set, YSU went on a 7-3 run to go up 20-16. A kill by setter Angela Roidt made the score 21-17, and the Penguins scored went on to score the final five points of the set on a Roidt ace and three block assists from Allison Heinz and O'Hara. YSU had five blocks in the set as Milwaukee hit .000.
After YSU was held to a .100 attack percentage in the first set, the Penguins warmed up and hit .314 in the second set and .281 in the third.
YSU trailed just once in the second set but led just 17-15 after an attack error. The lead ballooned to four twice, but it was three straight blocks after the score went to 22-18 that gave the Penguins the win.
The Penguins led 16-14 in the finale when they went on a 9-2 run to close the match.
Youngstown State will play at Green Bay on Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern
