Guins' Winning Streak Halts as Green Bay Wins in Four
Green Bay, Wis. -- Nikki Hintze had 13 kills to lead four Green Bay players in double figures, and the Phoenix held on to beat Youngstown State in four sets 27-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18 on Saturday evening at the Kress Center.
Ruth Boscaljon had 13 kills to lead YSU, and Brittany Grove had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. The Penguins, however, hit just .113 as no player hit better than .200.
Abbey Ginter added 12 kills on a .310 attack percentage for the Phoenix, who hit .188. Whitney Schott and Laura Garrow had 23 digs apiece as Green Bay improved to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League. YSU, which had won three straight league matches, dropped to 5-11 and 3-3.
Brittany Holland added 15 digs and three aces for the Penguins, Laurie Shives had 25 digs and Brittany McNeal had a career-best 24.
Neither team led by more than two in the opening set until Green Bay went ahead 15-12 on a Hintze kill. YSU scored four straight points to go ahead 17-16, and Green Bay answered to take a three-point lead at 22-19. The Penguins scored five of the next seven points to get a set point at 24-23, but Green Bay benefitted from three YSU attack errors down the stretch to win 27-25.
Green Bay then scored the first six points of the second set, and Youngstown State got no closer than 7-4 the entire way as the Phoenix won 25-14.
The Penguins came out of the locker room in the third set and never trailed in its 25-18 win. After YSU took a 10-5 lead, Green Bay managed to get the score within 12-10. From that point, the Penguins went on a 7-2 run to go ahead 19-12, and Green Bay never got closer than 21-16.
YSU led 5-1 in the fourth set before Green Bay worked its way back to tie the score at 7-7. The score was knotted again at 10-10 when Green Bay went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 17-11. YSU got back within four twice, but the Phoenix closed out the set on 7-4 run to win 25-18.
Youngstown State will play two Horizon League matches during the week and will welcome area high schools and middle schools to Beeghly Center. The Penguins host Wright State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Cleveland State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
