Boscaljon Leads Efficient Offense as Guins Beat Loyola in Four
Youngstown -- Ruth Boscaljon had 20 kills, and Youngstown State hit .336 as a team to defeat Loyola in four sets on Friday evening at the Beeghly Center.
Boscaljon hit .600 and added four blocks to her evening as she moved into third place in school history in career kills and career blocks. Brittany Grove had 13 kills, and Allison Heinz added 12 as YSU sent head coach Joe Bonner home with a win on his birthday.
The Penguins improved to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League, and Loyola dropped to 8-8 and 1-2. YSU will host UIC on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Boscaljon had four kills in the first set, five in the second, six in the third and five in the fourth as YSU won 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22. Laurie Shives' 21 digs headlined four players in double figures, and freshman setter Angela Roidt had 51 assists.
YSU led most of the first set until Loyola took its first lead at 17-16. YSU got within one at 19-18, but Loyola opened up a three point lead and won 25-22. Colleen Francis had six of her team-high 16 kills in the set.
The Penguins never trailed in the first set, but they never lead by more than two until 16-13 on a Loyola attack error. The Penguins extended the lead to 19-14 on a Haley Kapferer kill, and Loyola never got closer than three.
YSU scored the six points of the third set, and a four-point run helped stave off a Ramblers rally once the score got to 13-11.
Loyola led 4-2 in the fourth set when YSU scored seven straight points on Grove's serve to to up 9-4. The Ramblers then scored eight of the next nine points, including seven straight, to go ahead 12-10 on an ace from Mallory Curran. YSU regained the lead at 15-14 on an attack error, and back-to-back kills by Boscaljon gave the Guins a three-point cushion en route to the win.
With her 20 kills and four blocks, Boscaljon upped her career totals to 1,149 kills and 421 blocks.
