Guins Drop Five-Setter to Evansville; Boscaljon Earns All-Tourney Nod
Cincinnati -- The Youngstown State volleyball team took Evansville past 25 points in two sets but couldn't capitalize on two match points in the fourth set in a 3-2 loss on Saturday evening.
The Penguins took the first and third sets soundly, 25-19 and 25-15, but Evansville hung on to take the second set 31-29 and the fourth 28-26. The Purple Aces then won the finale 15-9.
All-Tournament

34 for the weekend.Ruth Boscaljon finished with 16 kills to earn all-tournament team honors and moved into fifth place on YSU's career kills chart. She now has 1,062, which moved her ahead of Kristen Meech. Allison Heinz added 13 kills, and freshmen Suzanne Lasseigne and Angela Roidt both had double-doubles. Lasseigne ha 12 kills and 10 digs, and Roidt had 10 digs and 47 assists. Laurie Shives added 29 digs.
Brooke Maher had 24 kills and 13 digs, and Hannah Wilson had 17 kills to lead Evansville.
The Penguins were hurt by six serving errors and six receiving errors.
Boscaljon had five of her kills in the first set, two of which came when YSU scored eight of the final 10 points. The Guins hit .364 in the set with 14 kills against just two errors.
Maher and Wilson had seven kills apiece in the second set as Evansville scored 27 of its 31 points on kills. Neither team led by more than two until Roidt's ace put the Penguins ahead 24-21. Evansville answered by scoring four straight points to go ahead 25-24, and the Purple Aces staved off two more YSU set points to win 31-29.
Youngstown State never trailed in the third set and outhit Evansville .278 to .044. Heinz had five kills in the set, and the Penguins combined for three blocks.
YSU led by as many as five at 17-12 in the fourth set before Evansville rallied. The Purple Aces took their first lead since 7-6 at 24-23 before Kaitlin O'Hara and Heinz had back-to-back kills for YSU. Rachel Robinson and Kaisi Nixon came up with a block to stave off one match point, and Maher's seventh kill of the set staved off another. That started a three-point run that gave Evansville a 28-26 win.
Evansville jumped out to an 8-4 lead and got four more kills from Maher to win the final set 15-9.
Youngstown State will play the University at Buffalo twice next weekend. The Penguins and Bulls will play Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
